Metal Roof: What's True and What's False

FALSE:

If it's raining, the metal roofs can be very loud.

TRUE:

Metal roofs aren't noisy. This myth is about the noise that rain creates on old buildings or barns that have a roof made of metal. There's a distinction between the materials made of metal that are used on barns as opposed to a residential roofs. The foundation or base on which the underlayment and roofing material are connected to is called decking. The decking that is attached to the roof of a house or structure is strong and, together with the underlayment beneath the metal, helps reduce noise, creating an unintentionally quiet roof. More or less loud than a tile or shingle roof.

FALSE:

Metal roofing is heavy.

TRUE:

It turns out that metal roofing isn't that heavy. The average metal roof is around 50% lighter than asphalt shingle and 75% less weight than concrete tiles.

FALSE:

It's impossible to walk across a roof made of metal.

TRUE:

Of course, you can walk on a roof made of metal. All it takes is the roof deck. If your deck is sturdy and stable, like the other types of roofs, the steel is strong and will stand up to the weight of your body.

FALSE:

Metal roofs are extremely hot.

TRUE:

In fact, the reverse is actually the case, but it's not quite the same. Metal roofs are hot, but some metal roofs possess reflective properties that help to keep your home cool in summer. To make the explanation, here's the short version: Asphalt shingles absorb heat, making them hotter longer. Metal reflects heat and light because of its small thermal mass. So when the weather cools, the roof cools off.

FALSE:

Metal attracts lightning, and so the roof will be hit more quickly.

TRUE:

Nope. Lightning hits the highest point; therefore, when your roof is made of asphalt or tile, it is at a similar risk of being struck by lightning as a metal roof.

FALSE:

The value of homes for resales is lower due to the fact that people do not appreciate metal roofing.

TRUE:

If it is in the right setting and in the right house, a metal roof increases the value of a house by between 1 and 6 percent over a house that has asphalt shingles.

FALSE:

Metal roofs don't come with the designs or colors concrete or asphalt tile have.

TRUE:

The color that your roof is made of must be in harmony with the design of your house. There are many options to achieve this! Color options. Style options. Design options. However, your choices are unlimited!

FALSE:

Metal roofs are less robust.

TRUE:

What? There's no way! In our research, we found that metal roofing is extremely robust. It is more expensive; however, its life expectancy is more than 60 years, with no significant wear and tear. If installed correctly, the roof of a metal structure will be able to withstand hail, wind or rain, rodents, mildew, and so on. Metal roofs are also noncombustible, which means that it is fire resistant to the best quality that can be achieved.

FALSE:

The price for metal roofing is about the same as a premium metal shingle.

TRUE:

We would like to see that happen, but the typical metal roof will cost 3-4 times more expensive in comparison to asphalt roofing. It's a good investment but, if installed correctly, the metal roof can last for at least 60 years.
